Anonymous

This evening I decided to have a little fun and began answering anonymous questions on formspring.me/rhettprice.

Here are a few of the resulting questions and answers:

Q: Hi. Do you have any rituals you do before you play?

Actually, yes! Before almost every show I talk to God for a short amount of time and listen to Yo Yo Ma playing a Bach cello suite to calm me down, shortly followed by a high energy song to pump me up, often Family Force 5. Before several shows I eat Fun Dip, and before/during almost every single show I drink a Rockstar energy drink so I can perform at my fullest. :)

Q: I made a twitter just to follow you. well, you and justin timberlake now...

I feel so special right now! That's awesome! :)
Q: when did the whole fun dip thing start? i came in like halfway through the joke, so fill me in por favor.

hahaha It's FUN DIP! How could I not fall in love with it?? Ok no seriously....I have a HUGE sweet tooth, and one day in Midland, Tx, we were talking about candies we hadn't had since we were kids.....I remembered Fun Dip, and just couldn't stop thinking about how bad I wanted some. I bought one and ate it on the way home, and bought like an entire box the next day! Since then, nothing has come halfway close to rocking my world like Fun Dip does! lol Anddd people are awesome enough to keep my stash full by mailing it to me! :D

Q: i think your man crush on john mayer is sososo cute. <3

hahaha At one time I would've replied, "I DON'T HAVE A MAN CRUSH!" But I can no longer deny it, John Mayer is the freaking man. No really though.....last summer (2009) I would get up every day and before going to the studio or gig or anything, practice my violin along with his solos on the Where The Light Is dvd. Amazing! My friend Charlie Howery (used to play with him in Tx!) showed me John's music a few years ago, and I owe him. Big time.

Q: Do you have what it takes to be a porn star? I've seen your tight pants at shows!

You can find this along with my usual updates on tumblr (rhettprice.tumblr.com), but I thought this was worth putting up here!

I'm not allowed to say much more about this, but here's a pic of a live room in a studio we might record our next album at!

Thanks for making these things even possible! I'm so excited and so, so blessed to have the support and love of so many people! Thank you!

Love,

2010 SUMMER TOUR!!!

Drunk Cougars!

In the United States, from 1920-1933 there was an era known as the Prohibition Era, when the government ruled that it was illegal to consume, sell, make, or transport alcohol. Of course that wouldn’t last long, and soon there were places known as Speakeasy’s that would illegally sell alcohol. Friday night, we played in Austin, TX at a venue called Speakeasy, hands down one of the coolest venues we’ve ever played!

After we finished sound check at this amazing establishment, I met up with my sister and a friend from my short time at WTAMU and walked around downtown Austin, stopping in an absolutely AMAZING restaurant called Pita Pit! Ok if you’ve known me for very long at all you know how easily I can get distracted so I just want to say right now that John Mayer is the single most influential musician in my life right now, and he is the freaking man.

So I get back to Speakeasy 30 min before the opener goes on, and as I wait for the bartender to pour me a water for the show, a lady at the bar begins to talk to me. She’s middle-aged, quite attractive, and very well spoken. After asking my age, she tells me she’s 31 years old, and that she’s at the bar with her friend, who’d newly single. Her friend then gets up, after claiming that the violin is her favorite instrument, hugs me for quite a long time. I insist that I must go hang out upstairs with my sister and my friend, so she kisses me on the neck, hugs me once more, and says she can’t wait to see us perform. Great. By the time we were playing, she was wasted…..walking up to the stage and taking photos of me and trying to show me, and she even wrote a note with her name, number, and email address on it!

We have a date tomorrow night. Hahaha Just kidding!

I didn’t have a lot more to say, and Will just saved me because now I apparently HAVE to go eat burgers- well, I suppose I’ll sacrifice myself and eat a delicious burger! Haha Hope you’re enjoying the crazy stories! We only have one more show on the tour, and then we’ll be touring the East Coast throughout the Fall!

Love you all so much!

2010 Texas Tour: R.I.P. SRV

Friday was a special day for me. We were playing our first Austin, TX show of the tour (the first Austin show I’ve EVER played), and it just so happened that 20 years ago to the day, Stevie Ray Vaughn passed away in a fatal plane crash. Stevie was one of the most influential guitarists to ever live, ranking with the likes of Les Paul, Jimi Hendrix, and Carlos Santana. His amazing guitar playing was as tasteful as it was impressive, and his music has left a lasting impression on generations of musicians, and will continue to do so for many generations to come. As I walked up to the Stevie Ray Vaughn memorial statue in silence, I felt as though I was at his actual funeral…..it was 5pm in the blazing hot sun, and people were still walking up to the statue, sitting around it in silence, respectfully reflecting in the experiences they have had through Stevie’s music. I was one of them.

As I stood there looking at the statue, still in awe at the pure raw talent that this 35 year old man had been blessed with, I found myself feeling a bit emotional. I never met Stevie, as he passed away when I was only a year old, and I have never even met anyone who had met him, but standing there I still felt a quite profound feeling of sadness and respect, something unusual for not having personally known him at all. But music does that to people. Music connects people in an amazing way that almost doesn’t even make sense to me, and I love it. The first record I ever owned of Stevie’s was Live at Carnegie Hall, and as first walked up to the statue of a man I so deeply admired, that record began playing through a boombox placed behind the statue by someone. Excuse me for using such a cliche phrase, but it was a strangely magical moment.

After we left the memorial, exchanging stories and memories involving Stevie and his music, I realized that just a year ago, 19 years to the day after SRV had passed away, I was loading up a small Ford Focus with my dad to head to Boston to attend my dream school, the Berklee College of Music. Since I went to Berklee, I have performed with Ayla Brown, joined Will Makar & The Red Line, recorded with George Massenburg (James Taylor, Billy Joel, Dixie Chicks, Linda Ronstadt, Journey, etc.), and been offered a record contract. A year later, I am in Austin, on tour with Will Makar & The Red Line, the only band I have ever performed with and been truly entertained with at the same time. I have been so blessed, so privileged to have experienced what I have experienced through the past year, and through SRV’s music, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. August 27th is a special day, and I look forward to what may happen until next year. RIP Stevie, you are missed.
